2013 was a rough year. One minute I was standing on solid ground and the next minute the ground was crumbling beneath me. My life was in turmoil and everything I believed to be… was not.
I have always been of the creed that everything happens for a reason. This sounds fantastic when something good happens, however, it’s a hard pill to swallow when you are facing something awful. Early that year, my sweet Mother sent me the book, A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. I kept it on my nightstand and read from it regularly. His message resonated with me and consequently I began to put his teachings into practice in my daily life.
To this day, I am thankful the book was part of me when it all came crashing down.
Awaking one morning in a semi-lucid state, where dreams blend with reality and it takes a minute to realize where the line is drawn. Most of all, I found myself in disbelief because, my reality was the nightmare and I longed to slip back into a dream of something more pleasant. Turning on the computer, the first thing I see is the following note from the Eckhart Tolle website:
“Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.” ~Eckart Tolle
In that instant, it was crystal clear to me and I accepted my reality whole heartedly and without resistance. There is peace in accepting what is and with that peace comes happiness and the grace to embrace the moment.
For the first time, I felt clarity in my purpose and in my consciousness. Even during this traumatic time in my life, I was able to feel happiness.
I have pulled nine other quotes from various teachers I am drawn to. The quotes relate to kindness, to enlightenment, most noteworthy; to empathy for others and to finding your happiness within.
“Anybody who tells you that he has some way of leading you to spiritual enlightenment is like somebody who picks your pocket and sells you your own watch.” ~Alan Watts
“I, Awareness, cannot be enlightened. I am already the light that illumines all experience. Nor can a separate self be enlightened for when the separate self faces the light, it vanishes, just as does a shadow when exposed to the sun.” ~Rupert Spira
“When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over. He does not need punishment; he needs help. That’s the message he is sending.”
~Thich Nhat Hanh
“The practice of mindfulness begins in the small, remote cave of your unconscious mind and blossoms with the sunlight of your conscious life, reaching far beyond the people and places you can see.” ~Earon Davis
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” ~Kahlil Gibran
