In July 2016, DandeLyon began canvasing the Fort Scott Kansas area looking to purchase a suitable space to open a Yoga Studio and Wellness Center. This was following her massive hemorrhagic stroke in July 2014, at the age of 43, that left her paralyzed on her right side. DandeLyon’s recovery focused on daily intention, yoga, and breathing. Her remarkable path to recovery led her to The White Lotus where she completed her yoga teacher training.
On her first visit to 123 National Ave she stood in the middle of the sanctuary; the epic architecture, breathtakingly beautiful stained glass windows and the calm feeling of the sanctuary spoke to her. “This place is a place for healing and sharing, built with care & craftsmanship, steeped with love & hope from 100 years of prayer and worship.” So the journey began.
Located in the historic sanctuary of the former St. Andrews Church, the Shiney Studios features and an epic space. The history of the building dates back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s with the cornerstone for the existing building was laid in July 19th, 1903. It is constructed of locally pressed brick and carthage limestone in a simple Gothic Design reminiscent of English Country Churches. The rafters, window frames and interior woodwork are native oak. Almost all the furnishings are particular memorials to or thank offerings from Parishoners, most were installed prior to 1906. There has been very little alternation to the building since it’s erection in 1903.
“The goal was to resuscitate and preserve the neglected building, finding its old bones and breathing life back into it. It in itself is an amazing piece of art. Priceless in our opinion. Simultaneously offering a place for the community to come and experience the healing art of Yoga and wellness.”
The studio theme is The Art of Mindful Living! Work is being done to rejuvenate the building and to breathe life back into it. Countless hours were spent rubbing oil into the wood floors and ornate wood work, cleaning and caring for the 1908 Pfeffer Organ and the priceless stained glass windows (both are main attractions to this space) and little by little it came back to life. Furniture from the Parish House was repurposed for the boutique to reflect the age and wisdom that this building possesses.
